Kerala Fish curry

A spicy and flavorful fish curry is a main item in a non vegetarian lunch meal. There are lot of methods to prepare fish curry. Here I have tried the recipe my mom makes with the common fishes available in Kannur. I have taken Salmon for this recipe since here it is the most tastiest fish and also healthy one compared to other sea food.

INGREDIENTS:
  • Salmon- cut and cleaned- 8 pieces
  • Onions- 1/2 sliced
  • Tomatoes- 1 cubed
  • Ginger- one inch piece minced
  • Garlic- one pod minced
  • Green chilly- 3 small slit lengthwise
  • Red chilly powder- two tablespoon
  • Turmeric powder- one tablespoon
  • Salt as needed
  • Tamarind- paste made with water and lemon sized ball of tamarind
  • Fish masala- two tablespoon (I use Eastern Fish masala)
  • Coconut grated- 1/2 cup
  • Curry leaves for garnishing
  • Coconut oil for seasoning
How to Prepare :

Step 1:Fish pieces are cleaned and marinated with salt , red chilly powder and turmeric powder.

Step 2: Coconut paste
Grated coconut is mixed with the sliced onions , ginger and garlic . It is then made to a smooth paste in a blender.

Step3: Extract one cup tamarind juice ( Soak the tamarind in one cup warm water and extract the juice after 15 minutes, filter and use the extract as it may have impurities)

Step 4: Gravy
In a flat pan pour in the tamarind juice and the coconut paste. Boil the mixture . Add salt , turmeric powder, red chilly powder and fish masala. Boil the gravy till it thickens and all the tastes are optimum. Add the Fish pieces and again cook the pieces in the gravy till done. Do not stir often as it will break the pieces. When the gravy is thickened switch off the flame.

Step 5: Seasoning an serving
Season with few drops of coconut oil on the top of the gravy and garnish with few curry leaves and slit green Shilly. serve hot.
