Fish Thoran (Fish sambol)

This is a normal thoran type dish made with fish. Here we keep trying new techniques to reduce the smell of fish inside the apartment as its tough to get rid of odors here . The carpet and the heater running full time being the culprits. So now there is this dish which is easy, tasty and has less smell , even to pack for lunch . Its also a dry preparation and the taste is not also very "fishy". 


Serves 4

INGREDIENTS:
  • Salmon pieces- cut and cleaned- 6
  • 1 meduim sized onion- finely chopped
  • 3 - pearl onions or shallots
  • 4- green chillies
  • 3 garlic pods- finely chopped
  • 1 inch piece ginger- finely chopped
  • 1/4 tablespoon - uradh dal (Uzhunnu)
  • 2 tablespoons- Turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoons- Red chilly powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon - cumin seeds
  • salt as needed
  • Grated Coconut- 1/4 cup
  • Curry leaves to garnish
  • Coconut oil
  • Lemon juice- 1/2 teaspoon

How to prepare:

Step 1: Marinate the fish pieces with some salt, 1 tablespoon turmeric powder and 1 tablespoon red chilly powder and keep aside for 15 minutes. Then steam it for about 20 minutes till it is cooked well. Remove the bones (If it has any) if it is boneless simply mash it lightly with a spoon. Keep aside.

Step 2: Coconut paste
Grind coconut with pearl onions, ginger, garlic ,green chilly and cumin seeds.

Step 3: Heat oil in a kadain, splutter mustard seeds, add uradh dal and saute till it becomes brown. Then add chopped onions and saute till it turns light brown. Add the coconut paste and saute till its raw smell leaves. Add the mashed fish and saute till it mixes well with the masala. Add turmeric powder and red chilly powder and the required salt. Sprinkle some lemon juice over the masala.

Step4: Garnish with curry leaves or chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or chappathy.
