Aval upma (Poha / Beaten rice upma )

This is a very simple breakfast dish which needs less time, effort and ingredients. It is also healthy and filling. You can make variations out of it . I am giving here a very simple method to prepare it.

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS:

  • Thick white poha - 2 cups
  • 1 tablespoon- peanuts
  • 1 tablespoon- Raisins
  • 1 medium onion- finely chopped
  • 1 inch piece ginger- finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon- mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon- uradh dal
  • 1/4 teaspoon- Turmeric powder
  • 2 green chillies- finely chopped
  • Curry leaves to garnish

How to prepare:

Step 1: Wash the thick poha and soak it for 5 minutes ( Saoking for more time will make it soggy and less time would make it rough). Drain the water completely and keep aside

Step2: Heat oil in a kadai, splutter mustard seeds and add uradh dal saute till it turns brown.Add the peanuts and saute till it browns, add the raisins till it puffs up. Add the chopped ginger and green chilly and saute well till it is done. Add the chopped onions and saute till it becomes brown. Now add the poha and required salt and mix well. add the turmeric powder.  Cook for about 2 minutes .

Step 3: Garnish with curry leaves. Serve hot with banana slices.

1 comment:

  1. it is a good N.Indian breakfast & seems to have good carbs, fats and protein in balance. Adding roasted peanut in good amounts add up the taste along with a spoon full of raisins.

Before serving, fresh lime juice is generally added just before garnishing with farsan and corriander leaves.
