Kuzhi Paniyaram

This is a tasty snack prepared by steaming batter ,preferably the dosa batter. It can be made sweet or spicy. My husband gave the idea of preparing this one evening as during his childhood his mother used to prepare this for evening snack. So I asked amma  how to do it and she gave me the tips to do it. It is an easy to prepare snack which uses less oil and less time. Also if you have kids at home there is no doubt that this will be a sure hit with them. Try it out.
Serves 15 paniyarams

INGREDIENTS:
  • Dosa Batter- 2 cups (Ingredients and method of preparation are given in detail in the masala dosa recipe)
  • 1 medium sized onion- finely chopped
  • 1 medium sized tomato- finely chopped
  • 2 green chillied -finely chopped
  • Salt as needed
  • 2 tablespoons- coriander leaves/curry leaves- finely chopped
  • 1/2 inch piece ginger- finely chopepd
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated coconut (Optional)

How to Prepare:

Step1:
Mix the batter with all the above mentioned ingredients and keep aside.

Step2:
Heat oil in unniyappam making pan. If its non stick the better. Pour 1/4 teaspoon oil into each hole and allow it to become hot. When oil is hot pour a tablespoon of the batter mix into each hole and cover with lid. Allow it to cook for 2 minutes. Then with a chopstick or a toothpick flip it so that the sides are reversed. Allow it to cook for another 2  minutes. Both the sides should cook well and be brown in color. Prick it with the toothpick to see if it is cooked inside.

Step3:
Take it out of the pan and pat dry with tissue paper. Serve hot with tomato sauce for kids. For adults you can serve it hot with either tomato chutney or coconut chutney.
