Oothappam

This is a favourite breakfast item of any South Indian. It is prepared with a good dosa batter and some veggies. I used to prepare this when there is little batter left and when we need a change from the regular dosa. Its a tasty dish , easy to make too.

Serves four oothapams

INGREDIENTS:
  • Dosa Batter - 2 cups (Ingredients and preparations are mentioned in detail in the Masala dosa recipe)
  • 1 medium sized onion- finely chopped
  • 1 medium sized tomato- finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon coriander leaves /curry leaves - finely chopped
  • 2 green chillies- finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/2 inch piece ginger- finely chopped

How to Prepare:
Step 1:
Mix the batter with the above mentioned ingredients. Add little water and bring it to a pouring consistency. Heat the griddle and when its hot, pour a spoonful of the batter on the centre of the griddle and lightly spread it to make a round shape. Do not spread it then like a dosa , but the batter should be in the center and should be little thick and uniform in thickness all around. After it is done, lightly sprinkle oil over the edges and the center of the batter and leave it undisturbed to cook for about 10 minutes. Flip it to cook the other side. cook till both sides gets a light brown color and is evenly cooked throughout.

Step2: When the oothapam is cooked completely serve it hot with coconut chutney and sambar.
