Egg Puffs

My favorite evening snack- filling and tasty. It brings back memories of my childhood when my dad used to bring this favorite of mine on weekends . After reaching USA this is one food item I used to miss though there are  lots of other snacks available. Once  while chatting with my parents they told us that they had puffs in the evening. Then me and hubby  decided to make it at home as here its pretty easy . We get a special sheet to make the covering and we can make our own preferred masala. I had tried it with the normal vegetable masala before and it had come out  good. Then tried with chicken masala , which also came good. Now finally I tried the egg masala and it came awesome. I must say that I really felt proud after tasting it . We wont be missing this great snack again ..... I still remember when one of my friend visited us with her husband I had made this as an evening snack and she was pretty surprised thinking from where I got it from.

We used to have a very active Indian community here who keeps experimenting with the available items to make all our authentic Indian dishes and this one originated like that. So this recipe is for all those Indians in USA who miss this great Indian bakery item. I tell you, its very easy to make and anyone can do it with the normal grocery ingredients. And what more do u want , the filling also can be of your choice. Isn't that great?

To start with you need the Puff pastry sheets which makes the outer covering of the puffs. It comes in a small rectangular box. The one I use is Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry sheets. There will be two big sheets in one box. You can make 8 medium sized puffs ( refer my photos) or around 12 small ones using one sheet. Depends on what shape and size you prefer. This is available in most grocery stores in USA, in the frozen  where you get the dessert making items like cool whip.

Makes 8 medium sized puffs

INGREDIENTS:
  • Puff Pastry sheets- 1(out of two in the box)
  • Egg masala.
  • One boiled egg -sliced into thin round shapes (I used the egg slicer which does the job perfect)

How to Prepare:
Step 1: Thaw the one puff pastry sheet that is to be used , for about 40 minutes ,keeping at room temperature.

Step 2: Prepare egg masala
Heat oil in a kadai. Add 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds (Jeera) and saute till it becomes brown. Add one medium sized onion sliced lengthwise and saute till it becomes transparent and slightly browned. Add one tablespoon ginger garlic paste and saute till it is cooked. Add 1/2 tablespoon turmeric powder, 1/2 tablespoon red chilly powder and 1/2 tablespoon coriander powder and cook well adding 1/2 cup water and required salt. When almost done add 1 tablespoon tomato sauce and let the gravy thicken. Add finely chopped coriander leaves and remove from flame.
Boil one egg and cut it into very thin round shapes

Step3: Filling the sheets
Spread an aluminum foil on the counter top and sprinkle some maida on it. Place the thawed sheet on the surface and gently flatten the sheet using a rolling pin. Cut the sheet into eight equal sized squares. Fill about 1/4 tablespoon of the masala onto the center of each piece and then place an egg slice on top of the masala.
Fold the sheet diagonally and seal the sides using a fork to get a crimped look. Repeat the procedure for all the remaining pieces.

Step 4: Baking
Preheat the oven to 350 deg F. Place an aluminium foil on a baking sheet and apply cooking spray. Lay the stuffed pieces on the sheet spacing them an inch apart. Bake for 15 minutes or till it turns golden brown .
Tip: If you want glazing on the puffs , you can brush a mixture of well beaten egg white with one spoon water on the surface of the puffs before baking.

Step 5 : Serving
Serve the hot and yummy puffs with a steaming cup of tea.
