This is one easy ,tasty and common item in any Kerala household. Its one curry that we start with when we learn cooking as its easy and needs less time to make. In my house both me and hubby are great fans of it. I make this in different varieties. You can use different type dals for this and make different type coconut pastes according to your taste . Adding green chillies in the coconut paste and using moong dal is one variety that gives a different flavour,it is made in Palakkad region . The common type dal curry in Kerala is the same recipe given below , excluding tomato and mustard. The recipe I have given here is using some vegetables along with dal , its tasty and healthy too and the final seasoning has mustard which gives a homely flavor. so when you are running out of time to prepare lunch this recipe will save you.
Serves 4
INGREDIENTS:
Toor Dal- 1 cup
Tomato- 1 medium - cubed
Onion- 1 medium sized or 2 small - thinly sliced lengthwise
Drumsticks - 3 (Optional)
Carrots - 1/4 cup cubed (Optional)
Grated coconut -1/4 cup
Cumin seeds (Jeera)- 1/4 teaspoon
Mustard seeds- 1/4 teaspoon
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tablespoon
Red chilly powder - 1/2 tablespoon
Salt as needed

How to Prepare:
Step 1: Grind the coconut with jeera and make into a smooth paste.
Step 2: Boil 3 cups water in a pressure cooker and add the washed toor dal into it. Add the cubed tomatoes , carrots and drumsticks and mix well. Add salt , turmeric powder and red chilly powder. Mix well. Cook for one whistle .
Step 3: Add the coconut paste and stir well. When the gravy is thick and cooked well switch off flame.
Step 4: Heat oil in a small pan, add mustard . when it splutters add the sliced onions and saute till it turns transparent and light brown Add the curry leaves and switch off flame. Add the seasoning to the gravy and mix well.
Step5 : Serve hot with Boiled rice ,curd and pickle.
