This is a tasty and easy dish . I usually make fish curry with coconut masala paste but this time I needed a variety and wanted to try out with coconut milk. My friend Sumayya gave me this recipe. Her suggestion was to use kudampuli for this but as I did not have it in my stock I used the normal puli instead but taste was good. This goes well with boiled rice or with puttu and appam.
It can be prepared with any type of cut fish , I used the Blue Marlin Steak and it came out good.
Serves 4
INGREDIENTS:
- Fish - cut into small cubes - about 10 pieces (Preferably boneless)
- Coconut mik - 1/2 can (I used the Thai kitchen can)
- Pearl onions(Shallots/cheriya ulli)- 1/4 cup finely chopped
- Green chillies- 3 slit lengthwise
- Garlic and ginger - grated- two tablespoons
- Tamarind - one lemon sized ball
- Curry leaves - to garnish
- Salt as needed
- Turmeric powder- 1/2 tablespoon
- Red chilly powder- 2 tablespoon
- Coriander powder- 2 tablespoons
- Tomato- 1 medium sized - half chopped finely and half cut into big cubes
- Fish masala- 1 tablespoon (Optional) I prefer Eastern fish masala
- Mustard seeds- 1/2 tablespoon
- Uradh dal (uzhinnu) -1/4 tablespoon
How to Prepare:
Step 1: Marinate the fish pieces in turmeric powder- red chilly powder, coriander powder and salt .
Soak the tamarind in warm water and squeeze the tamarind extract in 1/4 cup water.
Step 2: Heat oil in a pan, splutter mustard seeds , add uradh dal and let it turn brown. Add the slit green chillies and the ginger garlic paste and saute till it is cooked well. Add the sliced pearl onions and saute till it turns slight brown. Add the finely chopped tomato pieces and saute till is is mashed and mixed with the gravy. Add the fish pieces , tamarind water and all the powders and salt. Add the tomato cubes also . Cover and cook for 15 minutes or till the fish is cooked well and the gravy is thickened.
Step 3: When the gravy is done and fish is cooked lower the flame and add the coconut milk. Stir well and let it mix well with the gravy, cook for another 5 minutes and switch off flame.
